WHAT YOU ARE SEEING
The terrain is real, from OS Terrain 50 on a 50 m grid. Colour bands are 10 m of height.
Nothing prehistoric survives in a 50 m grid, so every monument here is modelled.
Monuments sit at their surveyed positions and are drawn as they might have looked newly
built — chalk banks brilliant white, sarsens grey, timber posts dark.
Stonehenge is built to measured dimensions: a 110 m ditch, 56 Aubrey holes, thirty sarsens
carrying a continuous lintel ring, five trilithons in a horseshoe, and the bluestones inside
them. The axis runs to the midsummer sunrise at about 50°, with the Heel Stone on it.
You can drop the camera below the model. The floor is glazed, so from underneath you
can see the Wilsford Shaft descending thirty metres into the chalk.
The Middle Bronze Age field system is indicative. No field boundaries survive in
a 50 m terrain grid and none are in the source data, so these are generated rather than
surveyed: one coaxial grid on ground that is neither too steep nor too wet, keeping clear
of the monuments. They show where farming plausibly was, not where any wall stood.
The vertical scale is exaggerated because 88 m of relief across 10.8 km is very flat.
At ×1 it is true to life. The exaggeration applies to the monuments too, so the model
stays internally consistent.
